On my way home with my father yesterday, I noticed the music he had playing through our radio/mp3/anythingbutacdplayer. It was the Average White Band, a band that I had found music through various paths.
and....from Floetry to Fatboy Slim, the Average White Band is everywhere without being anywhere. They should be in an edition of Unsung, no?
Anyway, I heard this song and told myself, I need to add this to my iPod, because I cannot not have this song in my life any longer.

I've spoken before about Hollyweerd, but I've got something more to say...
I love them, because they speak to the nerd in me.
They speak to the band geek in me with their sax solos.
They speak to the pop culture freak in me that enjoys 2001: A Space Odyssey (2:34) references -Really guys? That ish threw me for a loop. Or the other song, 'Activator Muzik,' which is laden with so many ridiculous hair references it's hard not to laugh. (Especially with that 'Just for Me' line, jerked me back into the nineties with that one...)
They especially speak to the beat head in me, that loves weird production and unreleased Madlib beats and Peter, Bjorn and John samples. It's ridiculous how far and wide their influences go, and even more so how enjoyable and dope it all can be.
And finally, the Hip Hop lover in me can't get enough of these weirdos, and despite the fact that I'm wary about cluttering my new laptop with mixtapes and singles, I always make an exception for these guys.
So about a month ago, I downloaded one of their mixtapes, Candy for Kleptos -with again, some ridiculously crazy and beautiful cover art. (You know how some mixtapes just have pictures copied and pasted on em, or look like some kid took a profile maker from whateverlife.com and made an album cover, got it looking like something from a tween's myspace page? There's nothing like that going on over at Hollyweerd.) I've been simmering on it ever since. So here are a few of my favorites from their mixtape, maybe it'll get you interested in them as well.
And another, this is what they call the Sweden Remix, and I've said before, so you know why,
So...I suggest you cop it and enjoy, and get your piece of candy.
Enjoy!

Isn't that bad.
I'm sorry, but I love it, and am not afraid to say it.

I think I've expressed before my love of Poe,
But ya'll don't hear me though.
This is a gem I just recently uncovered -I'm still recovering from my Napster detox- and I thought I'd share this bit of gold with the townspeople.

One of the most unhealthy habits I have is dancing when my body is unable to.
For example, I'll be curled up, suffering from the flu, with nothing else to do but watch tv. When I tire of watching Behind the Music: Lil' Wayne for the eighth time, I'll notice that my room is in disarray. I'll turn on some music, and dance my way through my flu, and clean up....only to succumb once again when Behind the Music: T.I. comes on, and feel just as horrible, if not more so, than before.
Right now, this applies to me because I'm suffering one hell of a sinus headache, shucks, every time I glance at my textbook, my mind throbs something awful, and all I an do is close my eyes and hold my head. I just about want to cry, it's so painful.
Then this song came on,
and I danced.
Only when the song was over, it hit me again, and I just collapsed on the floor...
But as it says, 'Play this record as frequently as possible. Then as it becomes easier for you, play the record once a day, or as needed.'
And so I'll play it again.
Shall we dance?

Shut up, it's back, it's been tough, but deal!
On with the quote!
Lyrically a miracle
Mentally, I'm physical
Massively encryptical
Verbally invincible
These kids wanna battle but their material is pitiful
The only original
Wicked individual
Whenver I rhyme I break it down into syllables
Simply because it's coming straight out of Brooklyn
It sound so out of sight I got the blind people lookin'
It's Mr. Man the act,
Boy, what? You get stolen.
I'll cut your ass in half and leave you with a semicolon!"
-Mr. Man
This whole song is chocked full of dope lyrics (I much prefer the Evil Dee mix tho, but same same) but that one verse is one that makes me feel smart and just as dope as Mr.Man.
Enjoy and Rap Along!

under this guy's belt.
I never understood that phrase.
Let's try another.
There are 11 albums under this guy's name.
A lil' better.
Go ahead, count 'em.
That being said, listen to this.
Too much to handle?
Simmer on that for a bit.
So go ahead, now that I've split your head open into enlightenment, and buy some albums for a change. There's a wide variety, so take your pick.
Enjoy...

I don't know why more people don't have this song in their life, but I hope to change that.

As soon as I found out that the latest issue of Wax Poetics was to be their 'Brazil' issue, I knew I would have to get it.
(And to the cute guy who helped me find this magazine between the stacks, I didn't get your number, if you see this, leave a comment or something!)
And it had Gilberto Gil on the cover, a man who's music I admire, and whose work in representing his country and culture, I adore and understand, if that makes sense. If you know me and the career I'm choosing, it'll make sense.
Anyway, I have the most grattitude for Sergio Mendes for updating what I have dubbed my 'theme song.'
You already know how I do, when I heard his rendition on the Will.I.Am collaborated album, Timeless, I knew I had to hear the original. Some artists he covered I knew a little bit of about already, others not so much.
I believe it was through this connection did I look Gilberto Gil up and absorb every bit of music he had, along with his performance for Pangea Day. (You should watch, it's worth it.)
I know, it's such a cute and corny "We Are The World" concept, but one I truly respect and enjoy, (it's my career choice to be so culturally exploring and whatnot, along with sharing my culture with the world, but I digress.)
But no matter how I hear it, when I hear it, I feel a lot better.
And without further ado, my theme song.
Explore and Enjoy!

Life is krazy right about now.
Well, not really. It's a lot of sleeping and eating but I'm loving the college life as it has been pretty darn good to me so far. I wanna dance. I wanna celebrate.
And I love explaining the concept of GoGo to non natives.
Times are fun.
You wanna dance?
Bear with me ya'll.
I got problems.
